Former DOJ Usec Baraan opposes illegal drug trade claim

(Eagle News)– Former Justice Undersecretary Francisco Baraan III has denied President Rodrigo Duterte’s allegation that he muddled in the illegal drug trade inside New Bilibid Prison.

“All I can say now is that this is something I totally cannot imagine myself being involved in; it contradicts the deepest Christian values I hold dear. I know myself, and in due time the truth will prevail,” Baraan told in a statement.
In an interview, Duterte named Baraan as the undersecretary included in the drug matrix at the prison complex. The President also added that he has directed law enforcement agencies to validate the matrix before he makes formal statements.
It was also in the same interview where Duterte mentioned Senator Leila de Lima as the highest public official involved in the NBP drug matrix, and promised to show her role in the fiasco “maybe this week”.
On the other hand, Baraan said he is prepared to face the complaint that may be filed against him based on the President’s claim.
“I respect our President, but I am powerless before him. All I ask is fairness and due process, a chance to vindicate myself in a formal proceeding. If a complaint will be filed, so then I will have the opportunity to present my side.”
