(Reuters) —  Rescuers evacuated residents in southern China on Sunday (May 25) after flooding caused by heavy rains killed 19 people and affected thousands, state media reported.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV showed footage of rescuers carrying people from flooded homes in Jiangkou County of southwest Guizhou province.

State media reported that heavy flooding in Guangzhou city resulted in the collapse of an 80-year-old bridge.

Official Xinhua news agency said seven people are missing in Guangdong province, where flood levels in some regions reached up to 6.28m (25 inches).

Local weather bureau authorities expect rain and flooding to continue over this week, Xinhua said.
