OAKLAND, California (AFP) — Firefighters responding from various units worked quickly to extinguish a vegetation fire near Grizzly Park in Oakland on Wednesday (August 2).

Firefighters said the fire had reached a two-alarm status in scale, but that no structures of lives were in danger.

The fire was partially contained by late afternoon, a local CBS affiliate reported, citing a local fire department responding to the blaze.

Crews were at the scene fighting the blaze both on the ground and with air tankers.

The fire was reportedly burning next to nearby research institutes on land belonging to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

It caused road closures and ‘shelter in place’ warnings due to the smoke, local media reported.

Emergency crews issued evacuation orders nearby as a precautionary measure, and said electricity would be cut to the UC (University of California) Berkeley area in order to fight the fire.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
