‘Finding Dory’ sets animated film record on opening weekend

“Finding Dory,” the sequel to “Finding Nemo,” racked up a record-setting $136.2 million this weekend at the North American box office, making it the largest debut for an animated film.

The story picks up a year after the events of 2003’s “Finding Nemo,” and sees Dory, a chatty blue tang fish with short-term memory loss, living in the peaceful ocean habitat alongside Nemo the clownfish and his father Marlin.

Also making a strong debut was second-place finisher “Central Intelligence”, an action-comedy starring Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson, which earned $34.5 million.

Johnson portrays a high school nerd turned CIA agent who enlists the help of Hart’s character, a former high school jock turned accountant, to help him solve a case.

Also in wide release, “The Conjuring 2,” dropped to third place, but added an additional $15.6 million to its haul.

Action adventure thriller “Now You See Me 2,” added $9.7 million, and the critically-savaged fantasy thriller “Warcraft,” added $6.5 million, for a fourth and fifth place finish, respectively.
