Aug 17 (REUTERS)The Teen Choice Awards were handed out in Los Angeles on Sunday (August 16) and “Furious 7” and its star Paul Walker, who died in a 2013 car accident, were among those honored.
Furious 7 cast member and one of the hosts of the awards ceremony, Ludacris, confirmed that Furious 8 is green-lit for a 2017 release.
“Furious 8 is coming 2017, April of 2017, it is green-lit so it is going to happen. (Reporter asking ‘So you will be in it?’) Man I better be in it,” Ludacris told reporters ahead of the awards ceremony.
“Furious 7” took the award for Choice Movie: Action, and Vin Diesel honored Walker and his daughter, Meadow, in his acceptance speech.
Australian band ‘5 Seconds of Summer’ opened the Teen Choice Awards, performing ‘She’s Kind of Hot’ for their first time on live television.
“We’re very excited, it’s our first time performing ‘She’s Kind of Hot’ live on television, so it should be high-energy and fun, hopefully it goes well,” bassist, Calum Hood, said.
Singer-songwriter, Austin Mahone, also walked the red carpet. Mahone, who is signed with Cash Money, was nominated for ‘Choice Male Hottie’.
Cash Money Records, home to artists like Drake and Nicki Minaj, has dealt with a slew of controversy in recent months including disagreements arising between the label’s co-founder Birdman and rapper Lil Wayne.
“Naw, I mean Cash Money is great, they’ve taken really good care of me, every label has its ups and downs, so I mean they were in a tight little spot but they have worked everything out so they are all good now. Everything’s great,” Mahone told Reuters.
“Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson, won Choice Movie Actor: Sci-Fi / Fantasy; co-star Willow Shields said the Hunger Games’ journey coming to an end was ‘bitter sweet’ for the entire cast.
“It’s bitter sweet, I think that everyone is kind of sad that it’s over but we’re also content with how all the films have turned out and the fans seem very happy about how the films have turned out so I think we’re sad because we don’t work together anymore but we still get to hang out, so it’s bitter sweet,” Shields said.
‘The Duff’ starring Mae Whitman and Bella Thorne awarded Thorne with a Teen Choice Award for ‘Choice Movie Villian’.
“The more different you are, the weirder you are, the brighter you shine and when you get out of school and stuff, so even if it feels sad I just wanted to make some sort of movie to show people like, guys I have been there, I still feel that way all the time, the point is you have something so special, just let your freak flag fly,” Whitman said about the film, ‘The Duff’, before the awards ceremony kicked off.
Candice Patton, from the TV show, ‘The Flash’ shared some news about the upcoming second season.
“Yeah, I have a famous family member showing up in season two. We just broke news that Wally West is going to be here and he’s another iconic Flash from the comic book series so it’s going to be cool to have such iconic characters. Jack Garret is coming, Zoom is going to be here season two so we’re really pulling out all the stops, we don’t save any ideas,” Patton said.
Mexican actor, Jaime Camil from the TV show ‘Jane the Virgin’ gave thanks to his fans for helping him secure his nominations.
“I have to thank my fans, they voted like crazy to get me nominated in the category of the comedic actor, they are amazing. Just being here is a dream come true, we have a great show, critically acclaimed, critics and the audience they have been championing the show since the beginning, and now we are here recognized by the audience and the teens. It is nothing but blessings, but I am grateful for that,” Camil said.
With no cover on the red carpet, the high 80s temperature felt even hotter prompting comedians from the Australian comedy troupe, ‘The Janoskians’ to come with their clothes painted on.
“We saw the weather and we thought two ways to go, and we thought it’s going to be way too hot to wear any clothes so we wanted to come naked and this was as naked as Teen Choice would let us come,” actor, Beau Brooks said.
The Teen Choice Awards is an annual event where teen viewers vote on awards in the categories of music, movies, sports, television and fashion.
