Eleazar sacks EPD director for alleged verbal, physical assault of policewoman

(Eagle News) — The director of the Eastern Police District has been relieved from his post.

In a statement, National Capital Region Police Office chief Guillermo Eleazar said he ordered the temporary transfer of  Brig. Gen. Christopher Tambungan  to the NCRPO following a complaint of physical and verbal abuse from Cpl. April Santiago.

According to Eleazar, Santiago struck Tambungan in the head and hit her with a car door while hurling insults at her after she failed to help him with something.

A media report said Tambungan was requesting for police assistance to go to a restaurant, but she said there were no motorcycle units available as it was the election period.

Eleazar said the incident took place around 7 p.m. in San Juan on May 12, but  he only received the report on Tuesday, June 19, as Santiago feared she would be scolded.

“I further believe that the physical actuation of Gen Tambungan, including his alleged verbal abuse upon his victim, is unjustified and completely unbecoming of an officer of the PNP,” Eleazar said.

A probe into the incident is under way.
