(Eagle News) — Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said that the conviction of the policemen responsible for the death of 17-year old Kian Delos Santos “debunks the myth that there is a culture of immunity” in the government’s drug war.
Guevarra also said that this should also “serve as a warning” to law enforcers that “the rule of law and due process must always be observed.”

In a message to reporters, the Department of Justice (DOJ) chief said that policemen should be reminded that they should still follow the rule of law while doing their work in the government’s campaign to curb illegal drugs.
On Thursday, November 29, the Caloocan City Regional Trial Court Branch 125 found PO3 Arnel Oares, PO1 Jeremias Pereda and PO1 Jerwin Cruz guilty of killing Delos Santos in August 2017.
The policemen were sentenced to reclusion perpetua without eligibility of parole
“The conviction debunks the myth that there is a culture of impunity in the government’s war against illegal drugs,” Guevarra said.
“The conviction serves as a warning to our law enforcers that in the government’s campaign against illegal drugs, the rule of law and due process must always be observed,” he said.
