(Reuters) — Cuban state media released on Saturday (July 11) images of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro at an event recognizing agriculture workers.

The images show the former leader posing with workers during the event on Thursday (July 09).

Fidel Castro presented the workers with certificates of achievement in the production of food and highlighted their achievements despite global challenges like climate change, droughts and international conflicts.

The 88-year-old former leader made a rare public appearance just last week– his first since the landmark announcement that the U.S. was restoring relations with Havana.

Fidel Castro has made no public remarks about the historic announcement — which officially ends the 54-year cold war that has been a defining part of his life and legacy.
