Clark Int’l Airport suspends operations to assess damage after 6.1 magnitude quake




 

(Eagle News) – Operations of the Clark International Airport in Pampanga were suspended after a 6.1 magnitude quake damaged parts of the airport on Monday, April 22, according to the Department of Transportaton.

In a statement, Jaime Melo, president of Clark International Airport Corporation, said that the operations in Clark had to be suspended for 24 hours so they could assess the damage to the airport structures after the quake.

Broken glass panels and damaged ceilings were seen in various photos of the Clark airport after the the quake.

“Operation is temporarily suspended, except for en route flights,” the statement said.

Air traffic controllers at Clark established a temporary control station on the ground floor near the runway, according to Jim Sydiongco, director general of Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.

This is to monitor the landing of incoming aircraft.

He said that glass panels of its control tower broke during the quake.

“Accordingly, the tower is not being utilized at the moment while waiting for full damage assessment,” a statement posted by DOTr said.
