Chinese warships to dock in Manila for goodwill visit

(Eagle News) — Chinese warships will be in Manila for a four-day goodwill visit.

The Philippine Navy said in an advisory that the Chinese guided-missile frigate Wu Hu, frigate Han Dan, and replenishment ship Dong Ping Hu will dock at Pier 15 in South Harbor on Thursday, Jan. 17.

Since President Rodrigo Duterte assumed office, he has opted for friendlier relations with China, even if the country has a dispute with the Asian giant in the South China Sea.

The approach was distinct from the approach taken by Duterte’s predecessor,  Benigno Aquino III.

Aquino had opted to employ a hardline approach in dealing with the Asian giant.

He in fact took the dispute in the South China Sea before the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which eventually ruled in favor of the Philippines.
