CUBA, South America (Reuters) — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a floral offering at the monument of Cuban national hero Jose Marti on Tuesday (November 15) as the first act of his official visit in Cuba.

Trudeau arrived in Cuba on Tuesday for an official visit that will include meetings with Cuban President Raul Castro.

Cuban Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel was at the Jose Marti International Airport when Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire stepped off the plane. This is Trudeau’s first visit to Cuba since he assumed office one year ago.

Trudeau’s father, former Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, visited Cuba in 1976 and was highly regarded by former Cuban leader Fidel Castro. The younger Trudeau does not have a scheduled meeting with Fidel Castro, but government officials say it could happen.

On Trudeau’s agenda is a Wednesday (November 16) speech at the University of Havana. Later, he will give a news conference.

On Wednesday night he will leave Cuba for Argentina and then continue onto Peru for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit.
