Caloocan lawmaker wants President Duterte to create a commission to evaluate gov’t’s drug war

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — A Caloocan congressman is proposing the creation of a commission that will review the administration’s war on illegal drugs.

Caloocan City Rep. Edgar Erice also asked the Duterte administration to change tactics and adopt an alternative solution for the country’s illegal drug problem.

He said that the vast number of killings done during the war against drugs should serve as signal that it is about time to change tactics.

“My proposal, Mr. Speaker, is for the President to create a commission from both the administration and opposition, from the academe, from the judiciary and health experts and social scientists and come up with [an] evaluation of the current drug war, study the drug problem on a very comprehensive manner and come up with a no-nonsense drug program that will address the problem,” he said in a speech on Tuesday, September 5.

Erice said that the recent killings of teenagers and drug suspects in police operations in Caloocan had become alarming.

“Ang efforts ng local government na ayusin ang ekonomiya ng lungsod ay nababalewala dahil nagkakaroon na ng image na magulo at killing fields ang Caloocan,” Erice said in a radio interview.

The Caloocan City Congressman then proposed to the administration that instead of being brutal in dealing with the drug problem in the country, he suggested to address the root causes of the drug menace, and address this.

“Ang aking panawagan sa ating mahal na pangulo, baka pwede po pakinggan niyo rin kami at bigyan ng pag-aaral ang aming mungkahi na wala naman ibang hangad kundi matulungan ang bayan na sugpuin ang droga at maisalba ang marami nang collateral damage,” he said.
