Big improvement in Leyte economy noted, five years after supertyphoon Yolanda

(Eagle News) — Since Typhoon Yolanda hit Leyte five years ago, residents have experienced dramatic improvements in the economy, with the poverty rate in the province dramatically declining, according to Leyte governor Leopoldo Petilla.

Petilla said that the poverty rate in the province had declined by 7.8 percent and the peace and order in the province had also improved.

“Mabilis ang recovery and then mga 7.8 percent ang ibinababa ng poverty at that time. We had a very strong economy, madaming investment ang pumapasok. I think, sunod-sunod (since) the recovery.

Nasundan ito ng malakas na mga economic growth,” Petilla said in an interview over Net 25’s Agila Balita Alas Dose.

Petilla, however, revealed that their main problem is the slow pace of the housing projects for the victims of the supertyphoon.

“Kung mayroon tayo issue na medyo hindi maayos-ayos eh isa na lang naman, yung housing,” the Governor said.

Leyte is one of the provinces in eastern Visayas that was strongly damaged by Super Typhoon Yolanda on November 8, 2013 which claimed the lives of at least 6,000 people.
