(Eagle News) – There are at least 348 Filipinos abroad who have contracted COVID-19, and nine of them have already died, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

In its latest advisory, the DFA said that as of March 30, a total of 348 overseas Filipinos from 30 countries had been reported to have contracted the coronavirus infection.

They are in various areas in Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Middle East, Africa and the Americas, the DFA statement said.

Of the 348 reported overseas Filipinos with COVID-19, 228 are already undergoing treatment, while 11 have recovered.

There were also five Filipinos who died from the virus in Europe as of March 29.

The DFA, however, did not identify the countries in Europe where the five Filipino fatalities were reported.

“Europe, a region with a relatively large OFW presence, is one of the epicenters of COVID-19,” it said.

Over-all, there were nine reported Filipino fatalities due to the coronavirus abroad.

The DFA did not name the particular countries where there were reported COVID-19 positive Filipinos.

“The DFA’s personnel in our foreign service posts face the challenges brought about by this disease together with our people abroad, and remain committed to ensuring their welfare,” the foreign department said.
