ASEAN explores stronger public-private partnership in Disaster Management conference

The ASEAN ministers in-charge of disaster management gathered in Putrajaya, Malaysia on Friday, October 05, 2018 for the 6th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management (AMMDM) and the 7th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (COP to AADMER).

Prior to this, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad opened the commemoration of the ASEAN Day for Disaster Management before the ASEAN Ministers in charge of disaster management and the ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi.

The Ministers also expressed their condolences and extended their sympathies to those affected by the recent strong earthquakes and tsunami that struck Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia.

During the meeting, the ministers charted out the priorities of cooperation for ASEAN on better disaster preparedness as well as mitigating and reducing disaster risks, as they stressed the importance of enhancing ASEAN Member States’ disaster preparedness capacity.

The Ministers also expressed their commitment to enhance ASEAN’s joint disaster response, and also advised further exploration of public-private partnership opportunities in the resilience building of ASEAN Communities.
