Año sworn in as DILG chief

(Eagle News) — Retired General Eduardo Año on Monday, November 5 took his oath as the Secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) before President Rodrigo Duterte, after serving for 10 months as its officer-in-charge of the department.

According to Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo, President Duterte administered the oath taking of Año during a ceremony at the Malago Clubhouse in Malacañang.

Año, a former department undersecretary, was appointed by the President last January 2018 as the officer-in-charge of the DILG replacing former secretary Catalino Cuy who was appointed as head of the Dangerous Drugs Board.

The newly appointed official was supposed to assume the post last June 2017, but because of the law barring the appointment of newly-retired military officials within a year after retiring from service, Republic Act No. 6975 or the DILG Act of 1990, this prevented him to take on his new role.

“Natapos ito (ban) noon October 26, nag-birthday ako. Timing din opening ng Boracay so kanina ay nakapag-take oath ako kay Presidente bilang full-time Secretary [The ban ended last October 26 when I celebrated my birthday. It also coincided with the opening of Boracay. A while ago, I took my oath before the President as a full-time Secretary],” Año said in a radio interview on Monday.
