PASAY CITY, Philippines — Rain or shine, Toy Con PH invaded Manila last weekend from the 28th to the 30th of June at SM Convention Center in Pasay City.
Toy Con PH is the longest pop culture event in the Philippines — showcasing local toy companies to international shows.
Those who came to the event were amazed as they got to enjoy the feeling of being young again, reminiscing local Pinoy comic book characters, including those froms Kenkoy komiks, such as Mars Ravelo’s Darna, Captain Barbell and Lastikman.
Other well-known characters that made a tremendous impact all over the world for the youth and young at heart such as Spiderman, Astroboy, Batman, Superman, and characters from Starwars, among many others, were present as well.
As we missed the press conference of the “Walking Dead,” we decided to walk around and took the chance to stop by the Zombie area. The zombies were so realistic; we were shocked with their appearance with blood seeming to gush out of their faces. In curiosity, we asked around to find out how the zombies were made so they would look so real. We talked to the make-up artists who gave us some of the tricks of the trade on the “zombie” look.
After an hour of roaming around, rediscovering the history of comiks and getting to know a variety of artists who made a difference in the pop culture in the Philippines and abroad, we had nothing but pure satisfaction. We also enjoyed the booths full of toys — from local to international superheroes. It was a wonderful weekend to spend quality time with friends and family. Truly an event to remember and indeed a pop culture event that you wouldn’t want to miss.
