‘Star Wars’ smashes box office record

The newest installment of the “Star Wars” franchise, “The Force Awakens” generated a record $238 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales over the weekend

“The force awakens” took in a total of $517 million around the world, Disney said, earning from Friday (December 18) through Sunday (December 20).

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is set 30 years after the “Return of the Jedi”. Familiar characters like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo return, and newcomers Rey and Finn lead a younger generation grappling with conflicts that haunt the past. Plot details had been fiercely guarded for months.

Alvin and the chipmunks are back with the fourth installment to their franchise, “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip.”

Alvin and his buddies mistakenly believe their human friend Dave is about to get married and they set out on a road trip to try and stop the wedding. The film earned $14.4 million during its opening weekend.
