House to wait for SC’s final decision before deciding on its next move on impeachment case

(Eagle News) — The House of Representatives said that it still needed to wait for the final decision of the Supreme Court on the appeal that ousted Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno planned to file on the quo warranto case before it can decide on its next move.

The statement came after the Supreme Court favored the quo warranto petition, which resulted in Sereno’s ouster.

In an interview with DZEC Radyo Agila, House Justice Committee Chairman Reynaldo Umali explained that lawmakers can’t make any other move in the Sereno case.

“Baka magresulta ito ng constitutional crisis, alam mo naman ang sentimyento ng Senado at talagang gustong-gusto nilang mag-assume ng jurisdiction so parehong magkakabangga yung Korte Suprema and the Senate as an impeachment court. And we don’t like that to happen,” Umali said.

“Although executory na yung decision, hindi pa final yan kasi meron pang 15-day to file a motion for reconsideration kung mag-fa-file. At kapag nagfile naman ay depende na kung kailan matatapos yung desisyon ng Korte Suprema,” he added.
