COMELEC Chair Bautista welcomes dismissal of impeach complaint vs him

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chair Andres Bautista on Wednesday welcomed the dismissal of the impeachment complaint filed against him.

In a statement, Bautista thanked the House justice committee that ruled on the complaint and the House leadership for their “objectivity and fairness” when they junked the complaint filed against him by lawyers Ferdinand Topacio, Manuelita Luna, and former Rep. Jacinto Paras, for insufficiency in form.

The complaint stemmed from Bautista’s alleged failure to declare all his wealth in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth, and for alleged ill-gotten wealth, based on allegations hurled against the COMELEC chair by Patricia Bautista, his estranged wife.

“This proves to be a significant step in clearing my name after the malicious accusations hurled against me. As I have always maintained, the allegations are fabricated and baseless,” he said.

According to Bautista, with the dismissal of the complaint, it was “business as usual” at COMELEC.

“We at the COMELEC will continue to perform our mandate in respect of the credible conduct of Philippine elections,” he said.
