(Eagle News) — A magnitude 5.9 quake shook Bohol early Tuesday, July 2, at about 1 a.m., according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The quake’s epicenter was located 41 kilometers southeast of Lila, Bohol with a depth of 551 kilometers.

Phivolcs said that the quake was of tectonic origin, and occurred at 12:59 a.m., July 2.

Aftershocks can occur, but no damage is expected because the quake occurred so deep, at 551 kilometers below the land surface, Phivolcs said.

The quake was strong but is considered “insignificant” as it occurred 551 kilometers deep, explained Kris Vidad, Phivolcs science research assistant.

As of 11 a.m., Phivolcs has not recorded any aftershocks in the area.
