3 die; 1 missing due to flash floods, landslides in Mindanao — NDRRMC

MANILA, Sept. 5 (PNA) — At least three people died while one is missing due to flashfloods and landslides caused by heavy rain in different parts of Mindanao, the National Disaster Risk and Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Friday.

The NDRRMC said the flashflood and landslide incidents were caused by the incessant heavy rains brought about by a low pressure area (LPA) since Aug. 30 over Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon provinces.

NDRRMC identified the fatalities as Esperanza Cabanilla, 84, of Purok 1 in Barangay Macubog, Naawan town in Misamis Oriental, who died from drowning; Richard Sumalhay, 40, Sitio Calot, Barangay Sta. Felomina, Quezon in Bukidnon; and Rodencio Kailaw, 42, from Sitio Calot, Barangay Sta. Felomina, Quezon in Bukidnon, who both died in a landslide.

It added reported missing was Nelson Demaclid, 40, of Barangay Gango Libona, Bukidnon, who was carried away by the strong current of the overflowing spillway in Manlaoyan, Gango, Libona, Bukidnon.

NDRRMC also said that 803 families or 3,770 people in 15 barangays were affected. Of these, 162 families or 758 people are staying in 10 evacuation centers.

It added the floods damaged bridges in Barangays Camanga and Tuod in Camanga, Manticao; and Alubijid, Misamis Oriental.

The NDRRMC said the heavy rain destroyed 126 houses — 86 partially and 40 totally damaged — in Cagayan de Oro City, Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental.

Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said 8,435 families were affected in nine barangays of Kabacan town in Cotabato due to flash floods cause by overflowing Pulangi and Kabacan Rivers at 3 p.m. on September 2.

Of these, 162 families are staying in two evacuation centers.

The MDRRMC of Kabacan provided relief assistance to the affected families while the DSWD Region 12 extended food packs to the displaced families. (PNA)
