27.2 million students, mostly from public schools, troop to classes today, June 3, for school opening

(Eagle News) — Some 27.2 million students, mostly from public schools, troop to their classes today for the school opening for the school year 2019-2020.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones welcomed students nationwide for the school opening today which she said was made possible with the help of the “whole community” – from parents, teachers, local government units and national government agencies.

“On behalf of the Department of Education (DepEd), I am honored and pleased to welcome our almost 27.2 million learners from all over the country to the opening of School Year 2019-2020!” Briones said in a statement posted on the Department of Education’s twitter page.

She said that various sectors prepared the students for their safe journey today, as she cited concerted efforts for the successful

“Brigada Eskwela” that made sure classrooms for ready for the school opening.

“Through Brigada Eskwela, they all contributed their time, effort and resources to provide you with a safe and motivating learning environment,” Briones said.

She also stressed that efforts for Oplan Balik Eskwela gathered the DepEd’s allies to ensure that students “access to falrly priced commodities, safer streets and roads, and adequate water and electricity supply.”

“Our command centers and hotlines nationwide are open to serve you and ensure a smooth opening of classes,” the DepEd secretary said in a statement.

She said that given the increasing population and various challenges, the DepEd is increasing efforts “to deliver quality, accessible, relevant and liberating basic education.”

“As we pivot from access to quality, we are continuously reviewing our curriculum and developing our learning resources, including our teachers, through the transformation of our National Educators Academy of the Philippines,” Briones said.

“We are also continuously upgrading our facilities by improving their resistance to typhoons and earthquakes,” she said.

“As we open another school year, I enjoin everyone who believes in the cause of education to work together and join us in responding to the increasing development requirements of our country, and in creating a better world for the Filipino learners whom we are all sworn to serve. Maligayang pagbabalik-eskwela!” Briones added.
