Switzerland spoils home team opener; shuts out Korea 8-0

(Eagle News) – Women’s Hockey kicked off the the opening games of the 2018 Winter Olympics with fans giving a standing ovation for the hometown Korea team as they took the ice for pre-game warm-ups.

The telecast of the home opener of Korea versus Switzerland showed that fans filled the Kwandong Hockey Centre to cheer on a unified Korea team. This was the first time that North and South Korea combined to form a team in an Olympic year.

The Swiss, however, did not waste anytime getting on the scoreboard. Swiss forward Alina Muller scored the first goal at 10:23 into the first period and scored again just under three minutes after her first goal. Muller completed the hat trick with her third goal seconds before the first period ended.

By the end of the regulation, 19-year old Muller, tallied four goals and two assists to cap off the night with six points. The entire Swiss team lit up the lamp eight times and defended well, shutting out the Korea team in front of their own home crowd.

Muller had a breakout game by tying an Olympic record of 4 goals in Women’s Hockey history. Switzerland will face Japan on Monday.
