MIAMI,FLORIDA – The American League prevailed over the National League at the 88th annual All-Star Game for the fifth straight meeting, winning 2-1 in 10 innings at Marlins Park last Tuesday night.

Tied at 1-1 at the top of the 10th inning, Robinson Cano, the Seattle Mariners second baseman blasted a solo home run off Chicago Cubs closer Wade Davis. Cano circled around the bases, hitting the first extra inning home run at an All-Star Game in 50 years, earning him the game’s Most Valuable Player honors and a Corvette.

“It’s always good to be able to accomplish something great, especially for my family,” Robinson said at the media room along side his 6-month old daughter Galia Sofia and son, Robinson. “As a kid, you watch [Ken] Griffey and all those guys come to the All-Star Game and win MVP, you wanna get that feeling. I wanted to have this feeling.”

The game was scoreless until the middle of the 5th inning when Minnesota Twins’ Sano Miguel hit an RBI blooper, driving in the game’s first run. The NL tied the game in the bottom of the 6th inning when the St. Louis Cardinals’ Yadier Molina homered off Ervin Santana.

With Cano’s homer in the top of the 10th inning, the NL failed to capitalize in the bottom of the inning sealing the victory for the AL.

This year marked the first time that the All-Star game winning league did not determine home field for the World Series since 2002. Starting this year, the pennant winner with the best winning percentage will have home field advantage.
