20,000 pigs culled to control ASF

(Eagle News)—Some 20,000 pigs have already been culled in the country because of African Swine Fever, based from reports from the Department of Agriculture.

“The majority of the pigs were from Bulacan and the areas were already quarantined including nearby areas of Pampanga,” Agriculture Secretary William Dar said.

But he said that from the reported hog cases, only one-third were affected with ASF virus.

Two-thirds of the 20,000 pigs culled were not affected by ASF but were also culled or “depopulated” as part of protocol.

Dar said that affected areas in Bulacan were being cordoned and quarantines.

-Pampanga also affected by ASF-

And in nearby Pampanga, which is not that many as Bulacan, we are also applying 1-7-10 protocol,” he said.

Under the said DA protocol, quarantine checkpoints are set up in areas within a 1-kilometer radius of suspected farms, while those within a 7-kilometer radius, authorities conduct surveillance and limit the movement of pigs.

Within the 10-kilometer radius of affected regions, farm owners are mandated to report any suspected cases of ASF to the agriculture department.
