Tugade orders crackdown on Angkas drivers, operators

(Eagle News)—Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade has ordered a crackdown on Angkas drivers after learning the motorcycle ride-sharing service was continuing operations despite a Supreme Court order.

“Hulihin ninyo ang lahat ng Angkas riders na lalabag. Hindi naman tamang i-violate ng Angkas ang batas at ang Supreme Court order. Mali ‘yon,” Tugade said.

According to Tugade, when the court issued a temporary restraining order on the Department of Transportation’s directive to stop Angkas operations, they followed.

“Sana ay ganoon din sila. The rule of law must always prevail,” Tugade said.

On December 5, the High Court issued a TRO on Mandaluyong Regional Trial Court Branch 213 Judge Carlos Valenzuela’s Aug. 20 order stopping the DOTr from interfering in Angkas operations.

The SC TRO stems from a petition for certiorari filed by the DOTr there following their legal defeat at the Mandaluyong court.

The DOTr has argued Angkas motorcycles were colorum by default, and were unsafe for passengers.
