Speaker Alvarez not worried about Senate boycott of constituent assembly

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (Eagle News) — House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez is not worried about the threat of several Senators that they will boycott the constituent assembly proposed by the House of Representatives.

Alvarez said that the House of Representatives have sufficient numbers to amend the Constitution, whether or not the Senate joins them.

Alvarez also said that before the Constitution can be amended, there is a need for a 3/4 majority vote of the Congress. He said that the Congress is confident to achieve the vote even without the help of the senators.

Basta kami [sa House] tuloy-tuloy lang kami sa trabaho namin dito. We will satisfy the three-fourths of all the members na requirement ng ating Saligang Batas,” he said.

Tuloy-tuloy lang po kami dito tutal meron namang Supreme Court para magdesisyon kung tama kami o mali,” he added.
