PNP hails Congress’ approval of third martial law extension in Mindanao; vows to respect human rights, follow rule of law

(Eagle News) — The Philippine National Police on Wednesday, Dec. 12, vowed to continue respecting human rights and to continue following the rule of law.

PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde issued the statement after Congress approved a third extension of martial law in Mindanao, heeding the request of President Rodrigo Duterte who had cited the need to sustain the gains in the region and the need to quell the existing rebellion there.

This is the third time martial law has been extended in Mindanao.

Duterte first sought for the imposition of martial law in the region after terrorists overran Marawi in May 2017.

The President later asked Congress to extend martial law in Mindanao until December 2017, and then later asked for another extension until December 2018.

“Police operations against the New People’s Army, Abu Sayyaf, (the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters) and other radical extremist groups will continue without let-up in support of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the local government units,” Albayalde said.

“This is a good day for the people of Mindanao to be assured of another full year of peace and security against the imminent threat of violence from extremist and communist terrorist forces,” Albayalde added.
