Palace: UN rights body intruding in PHL sovereignty with support of int’l probe into De Lima’s case

(Eagle News) — The Palace on Friday, Dec. 21, said the support of a body of the United Nations Human Rights Council  for a probe into what it said were the human rights violations against Senator Leila de Lima constituted an “intrusion of our sovereignty.”

“They have been saying that and we’ve been saying that the problem with you people is you’re listening to the critics of this administration. You are not investigating on your own,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a press briefing.

According to Panelo, “there is a process in this country and we follow that process.”

“They’re there (De Lima is detained) because probable cause was found, that’s why information was filed against this accused,” Panelo said.

The UNHRC’s Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) has referred De Lima’s case to three special rapporteurs after it found what it said was probable cause her rights had been violated.

De Lima is currently detained in Camp Crame on drug-related charges.
