Palace shrugs off Sereno’s comment on Poe’s disqualification

Malacañang shrugged off the apparent favorable statement of Supreme Court chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno on foundlings like presidential bet, Senator Grace Poe.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said it would be best to wait for the SC’s decision on the disqualification case against Poe and “not rely on the opinion of a single individual.”

The high court has been hearing Poe’s case after the commission on elections disqualified her as a presidential candidate for not being a natural born Filipino and for lack of 10-year residency requirement in the country.

During the oral argument, Sereno has warned that disqualifying the senator to seek the highest post for being a foundling could set a dangerous precedent and it could have impact on the rights of all the foundlings.

Meanwhile, petitioner Atty. Estrella Elamparo, in an interview in liwanagin natin, said that the provisions in the 1935 constitution clearly does not qualify Poe as a natural born citizen since she is a foundling that is unaware of her biological parents. (Eagle News Service)
