MMDA urged to consult affected sectors before implementing expanded coding scheme

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — Senator Grace Poe on Wednesday, June 28 advised the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to first conduct proper consultation with the affected sectors before it implements its expanded number coding scheme.

“Naiintindihan natin ang malaking hamon na kinakaharap ng MMDA sa pagresolba ng traffic sa Metro Manila. Subalit sa paghahanap ng solusyon, hindi dapat magpadalus-dalos,” Poe said in a statement.

“The plan to implement an expanded number coding scheme should be thoroughly reviewed and should undergo consultation with affected sectors. Is this the most effective solution? Is this something we need? Will this cause more harm than good?” Poe said.

Poe also stressed that the implementation of new policies should not be a “knee-jerk reaction” that would only benefit those who can afford to buy more vehicles.

“Gustuhin man natin ang mabilis na solusyon sa trapiko, hindi dapat ito ‘knee-jerk’ reaction para sa kaginhawahan ng iilan,” Poe said.

Under the expanded number coding scheme, instead of only being banned for one day, vehicles will be banned for two days every week allegedly to help address the traffic problem in the Philippine capital.
