I told my son Paolo to “do what he thinks is right” — President Duterte

(Eagle News) — “Kung ano lang ang tama sa iyo, gawin mo.”

This was what President Rodrigo Duterte  said he told his son Paolo, who resigned as vice mayor of Davao on Monday.

According to the President, he gave this reply on Sunday night, after his son asked him about what he thought about the vice mayor resigning from his post.

“Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Ikaw. You… you are in a position to do what is right. Kung ano lang ang tama sa iyo, gawin mo…’ Sabi ko, ‘Well, let the people decide. But if you think that there is a better (way) to do it, do what is right.’,” Duterte said, noting that he never suggested that his son resign.

According to the President, his son might have stepped down because he might have been “hurt” by the allegations thrown against him

“Siguro ‘yung sa anak niya, ‘yung pictorial at ‘yung—baka nasaktan din siya noong ‘yung mga insinuation about ‘yung sa… Napuno na siguro,” he said.

The President was referring to the photoshoot of Paolo’s daughter Isabelle in Malacanang, which was criticized by some, and the allegations of corruption hurled against his son in connection with the P6.4-billion shabu shipment that entered the country via Customs express lanes.

In his speech prior to his resignation on Monday, the vice mayor cited personal problems as among the reasons for his resignation, noting his public spat with his daughter Isabelle, and his failed first marriage.

He also cited delicadeza behind his move, noting the “maligning” of his reputation in connection with the P6.4-B shabu shipment.
