Fariñas advises House justice panel to “pick a few” allegations that will make up Articles of Impeachment vs Sereno

Cites experience as prosecutor during then-CJ Corona’s impeachment trial to boost his argument

(Eagle News) — House Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas advised members of the House justice panel to “pick only a few” allegations to be included in the articles of impeachment against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

To boost his argument, Fariñas recalled how he and 10 other prosecutors in the impeachment of then-Chief Justice Renato Corona were “laughed at” during his trial before the Senate sitting as an impeachment court.

Fariñas said he only acted as prosecutor then even if he did not sign the “hastily prepared” impeachment complaint against Corona because then-Speaker Feliciano Belmonte prevailed upon him.

“Walo ang articles of impeachment na ginawa. Pagdating dun para kaming nangangapa, napagsasabihan, napagtatawanan, hanggang inalis namin ibang articles of impeachment,” Fariñas said.

He said if Sereno’s impeachment reaches the Senate, “we have to prove each article of impeachment.”

“Let us pick a few only. ..Pamparami lang, wag na natin isama,” he said.

The House justice panel is slated to vote today on whether or not there is probable cause for the impeachment complaint filed by lawyer Larry Gadon against Sereno.

Sereno has been on indefinite leave since last week.
