‘The Fate of the Furious’ races to top spot at weekend box office

Reuters — The latest installment of “The Fast and the Furious” movie franchise raced to the top spot at the North American box office this weekend with a haul of an $100.2 million, according to boxofficemojo.com

The film, titled “The Fate of the Furious,” features the signature fast car chases, daring stunts and explosions of the previous seven films but this time it has the bonus of Oscar-winner Charlize Theron playing the principal villain.

“The Fate of the Furious” opened in 4,311 theaters.

Last weekend’s big money earner, “The Boss Baby,” dropped just over 40% to second place for an estimated haul of 15.5 million, followed by “Beauty and the Beast” that settled in third place with a draw of $13.6 million.

In fourth place, Sony’s “Smurfs: The Lost Village” earned an estimated $6.5 million in tickets sales.

Rounding out the top five was ”Going in Style” that brought in an estimated $6.35 million in its second weekend at domestic theaters.
