Comelec: Gun ban to start on Jan. 13 next year

(Eagle News) — The Commission on Elections on Friday, November 23, said the start of the gun ban for the 2019 elections was on  January 13, 2019.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said the ban would last until June 12 of that year.

During this time, the Comelec said any permit to carry weapons outside an individual’s residence or place of business would be ineffective.

Jimenez said those who wish to be exempted from the gun ban should apply for a Certificate of Authority before the Comelec’s Committee on the Ban on Firearms and Security Personnel, under Comelec Resolution No. 10446.

The Comelec spokesperson said requirements for the CA should be submitted from Dec. 1, 2018 to May 29, 2019.

According to the poll body, it is prohibited to  “employ, avail or engage the services of security personnel or bodyguards” during the election period.

“It is also prohibited to transport and deliver firearms and/or its parts, ammunition and/or its components, and explosives and/or its components unless duly authorized by the Comelec through the CBFSP,” the Comelec said.

The mid-term elections in the country are scheduled on May 13 next year.

The positions to be contested include 12 seats in the Senate and all the seats in the House of Representatives, all provincial-level elected positions, all city-level elected positions and all municipal-level elected positions.
