More than 113,000 residents of Bicol and Eastern Visayas were evacuated from their homes because of typhoon Amang, international name Mekkhala.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), a total of 20,695 families or 113,160 persons were evacuated in the provinces of Albay, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Leyte, Biliran, Eastern Samar, and Samar.

More than 5,000 families or 21,000 residents were placed in 61 evacuation centers.

At least two persons were listed as fatalities during the height of Typhoon Amang.  One of them is Kristell Mae Padasas, 26, who died due to fatal head wounds in Tacloban City before the mass of the Catholic Church’s Pope Francis on Saturday, Jan. 17.  The other fatality was Domingo Tablate, 59, from Antipolo City.

As of 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2015, “Amang” has become a mere low pressure area located 160 kilometers east southeast of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.  The Northeast Monsoon also continues to affect Northern Luzon, according to the country’s weather bureau, PAGASA.
