Muntinlupa court defers Senator De Lima’s arraignment in drug case

(Eagle News) — A Muntinlupa court has postponed the arraignment of Senator Leila de Lima slated on Friday.

Judge Amelia Fabros-Corpuz of Branch 205 moved the date of her arraignment in the conspiracy to commit illegal drug trading case  to Sept. 15 instead.

The arraignment is in connection with the proliferation of illegal drugs in the New Bilibid Prison when she was justice secretary.

De Lima faces two other drug cases before Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court Branch 206 Judge Patria Manalastas-De Leon and Muntinlupa RTC Branch 204 Judge Juanita Guerrero.

Corpuz made the postponement after deciding in favor of the Department of Justice’s motion seeking for additional time to make a rejoinder.

The rejoinder would have been a response to the senator’s earlier comment on the prosecution’s opposition to lift the arrest order against her.

The prosecution was told to submit this on or before Aug. 25.

De Lima attended the hearing and spoke briefly with reporters, lashing out again at President Rodrigo Duterte.

She called him “mentally deranged” for supporting the Bulacan policemen who held “one-time bigtime operations” early this week that led to 32 suspects killed and several others arrested.

“What kind of a person is (that)?” she asked.

The President earlier said that the results of the operations only meant that the police were actually doing their jobs.
