Velasco, Romualdez nominate Cayetano to Speaker post

Presidential son Paolo Duterte also nominates Taguig-Pateros representative

(Eagle News)–Erstwhile Speaker contenders nominated Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano to the House speakership on Monday, July 22, in a turn of events that appeared to indicate an end to the Speakership issue.

Reps. Martin Romualdez and Lord Allan Velasco made the nomination during  the House of Representatives first regular session of the 18th Congress.

Under a term-sharing agreement backed by President Rodrigo Duterte, Velasco would serve as Speaker after Cayetano’s 15 months in the top House post.

Prior to their nomination, Rep. Paolo Duterte, the presidential son, also nominated Cayetano to the Speakership.

The united front among the former Speaker bets came after congressmen appeared divided over whom to elect to the post, and with President Duterte initially playing coy on whom he would support.

In the end, the President touted the term-sharing agreement between Cayetano and Velasco as the best option.

Apart from Cayetano, nominated for the top House post during the session was Manila Rep. Benny Abante.

Abante, however, also nominated Cayetano.
