United Nations: Maintaining Peace since 1945

QUEZON City, Philippines (October 24) – World peace –  a cliched but very relevant answer when you ask people what this world needs the most. Due to our diversity and cultural differences, it is not surprising that there is always a misunderstanding between two countries that often results to war. Thankfully, there is an organization that is always ready to resolve any conflict and promote unity around the globe; and that is the United Nations.

The United Nations is the successor of the League of Nations that was established by the Paris Peace Conference after the First World War. The League of Nations did not succeed in their attempt to stop global chaos and widespread crimes, plus they also lacked the presence of representatives from different countries. Said presence of representatives is essential considering that they need different perspectives when it comes to solving problems involving different nations. Years after, President Franklin Roosevelt held a meeting with several important people to discuss the declaration of the United Nations. Back then, the words “United Nations” are simply terms that are used by the President to describe the United States’ alliance with United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, and China. It was then in 1942, that 26 different countries signed the President’s Declaration and started breathing life into the organization. Finally, on October 24, 1945, United Nations was fully established with over 46 signatories from different countries. This date marked the start of a better future for our world. That is why it is celebrated every year throughout the globe and was given the name, “United Nations Day”.

According to Fasulo, the United Nations have 6 principal organs namely:

  • UN General Assembly – it is the primary organ of the UN for it facilitates the budget, the appointing of new members, and the election.
  • UN Secretariat – is in charge of managing other UN bodies and is headed by the Secretary General.
  • UN Security Council – maintains peace and order and secures the safety of the civilians.
  • UN Economic and Social Council – preserves the cooperation within the organization and other countries.
  • International Court of Justice – settles war disputes and handles legal matters.
  • UN Trusteeship Council – though it is inactive since 1994, this council was in charge of handling territorial matters and colonial possessions.

Up to this day, the United Nations is still fulfilling their promise of providing a safer and more peaceful surroundings for they believe that where there is peace and cooperation, there is order and improvement. Let us show our appreciation by celebrating the United Nations Day this coming October 24 and maintain peace in our land.
