A Department of Tourism official had this to say to those opposing the plan to shut down businesses in Boracay for 60 days in order to clean up the island.
In an interview over dzbb, Undersecretary Ricky Alegre asked the critics to submit a position paper.
“Kung meron silang suggestion para makamit yun within the six-month period, we’re very much interested to find out what it is kasi ngayon nalatag na ng gobyerno ang gagawin,” Alegre said.
Alegre said they were already slated to submit the recommendation to close down the business establishments on the island for 60 days on Monday, during the Cabinet meeting.
“We are very much interested in what they have to say…” he said.
On Thursday, Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo said she and Eduardo Año, officer in charge of the Department of the Interior and Local Government, had discussed about implementing the total closure of the businesses for 60 days during the rainy season to pave the way for a cleanup of the island.
She said during this time, less tourists come to Boracay.
Teo made the revelation after President Rodrigo Duterte called the tourist destination a “cesspool,” and gave authorities six months to clean it up.
The Philippine Travel Agencies Association of the Philippines has asked the government to put on hold the plan.
