Reuters — Starring Meryl Streep as the late Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham and Tom Hanks as late editor Ben Bradlee, “The Post” on Monday (November 28) was named the best film of 2017 by the National Board of Review, a New York-based 100 year-old group of academics, filmmakers and professionals.
Streep was named best actress and Hanks was voted best actor, setting the film up as an early front-runner for the Oscars.
The other ten prominent films that made the list for Top Films included Edgar Wright action crime drama “Baby Driver,” the love story “Call Me By Your Name,” James Franco’s comedy “The Disaster Artist,” the Alexander Payne social satire “Downsizing,” Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk,” the docu-fiction “The Florida Project,” racial horror “Get Out,” coming of age drama “Lady Bird,” X-Men spin-off “Logan,” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread.”
Other winners revealed were Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”) for Best Director, Jordan Peele (“Get Out”) for Best Directorial Debut, Willem Dafoe (“The Florida Project”) for Best Supporting Actor and Laurie Metcalf (“Lady Bird”) for Best Supporting Actress. The Israeli film “Foxtrot” won the award for Best Foreign Language, while “Jane” about primatologist Jane Goodall won the Best Documentary.
Last year’s winner was the Kenneth Lonergan film “Manchester by the Sea.”
