SURFING: Hawaii kicks off 2018 Pro Surfing Season with Sunset Open

HALEIWA, HAWAII (Eagle News) – The Sunset Open Surf Competition held from January 18-28 at Oahu Island’s Sunset Beach featured 112 men and women of various age groups and nationalities in competition.

Contenders included Hawaii natives Sonny Garcia, Kai Lenny, Ian Walsh, and Billy Kemper.

 

Seven total rounds with four heats per round lasted through the 10-day stretch and the best overcame the fierce winter waters of Oahu’s North Shore. The All-Hawaii final round featured Ian Gentil, Ian Walsh, Barron Mamiya, and Billy Kemper, who came out as the overall winner.

The next competition, The Volcom Pipe Pro is underway on Oahu’s North Shore. This competition is more intense and famously known for the Banzai Pipeline. This event will last until February 10. (Mark Angelo Abalos, Eagle News)
