Studies Show Lungs of Smokers Similar to Those With Diabetes

Diabetes is a long-term condition that causes high blood sugar levels of an individual. According to Medical News Today, over 382 million people are diagnosed to be suffering from it. Some 10% are Type1 (those whose cells can’t produce insulin) and 90% are Type2 (those whose cells are producing insulin but are not functioning).

Recently, an online article by clinicaladviser.com, suggested that people with diabetes have impaired lung function similar to that of  smokers. It concluded that diabetes can damage pulmonary functions in a limiting pattern based on 40 studies done with 27, 080 controlled subjects. In such a way it has demonstrated the same patterns of how a smoker’ lungs deteriorate.

Deteriorated lungs are more prone to illness.  People with impaired lungs are most likely to catch cold, flu or other communicable disease and will take longer time to recover.

Diabetes can adversely affect one’s breathing but with maintainenance, diabetes can be controlled and a healthy body weight can be achieved.

Another possible effect of diabetes as as observed by researchers is the stiffening of thorax and lungs due to glycation.  It can still be balanced through through proper diet and intake of insulin and other medications.
