“Star Trek Beyond” blasts off to first place finish at box office

REUTERS — “Star Trek Beyond” blasted off to a winning weekend at the North American box office from Friday (July 22) through Sunday (July 24). The film, which stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, reunites the Enterprise crew as they encounter an alien warrior race. It debuted with $59.6 million for a fist place finish, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.

Holding over from previous weeks, “The Secret Life of Pets” added $29.3 million to its global earnings of 270 million dollars; and “Ghostbusters” raked in an additional $21.6 million toward its international haul of 75 million dollars.

Tying in third place was the new horror film “Lights Out”, which follows a supernatural being that hides in the shadows before attacking its victims.

Also premiering was the animated film “Ice Age: Collision Course.” Featuring the vocal talents of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary and Jennifer Lopez, the movie follows the “Ice Age” franchise friends Sid, Manny and Diego as they try to survive a series of cosmic events threatening their world. It brought in $21 million in ticket sales.
