Sri Lankan President Sirisena in PHL for five-day state visit

(Eagle News) — President Maithripala Sirisena of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka arrived in the country for his five-day visit on Tuesday night.

The Sri Lankan President arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport at 10:51 PM.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the Sri Lankan President’s visit, which was upon President Rodrigo Duterte’s invitation, will last until Jan. 19.

Panelo said Sirisena was scheduled to meet Duterte in a welcome ceremony in Malacañang on Wednesday afternoon.

“Their bilateral discussions will focus on areas of mutual interest, including political, economic, agriculture, cultural and people-to-people engagement,” Panelo said.

Panelo added the Sri Lankan leader will visit the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Los Baños, Laguna, and is expected to meet the Sri Lankan community in Manila.

Panelo said this is the first visit of a Sri Lankan president who serves as both head of state and government under Sri Lanka’s 1978 Constitution.
