Signal No. 1 hoisted over Batanes as “Liwayway” accelerates

(Eagle News)–Signal No. 1 has been hoisted over Batanes as Tropical Storm “Liwayway” slightly accelerated.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said “Liwayway,” which is located 320 kilometers east northeast of Casiguran, Aurora, is likely to intensify into a severe tropical storm in the next 48 hours.

It is  less likely, however, to make landfall in the country and is forecast to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility either on Wednesday or Thursday.

PAGASA has also monitored a low pressure area 500 km west of Iba, Zambales which may turn into a Tropical Depression.

PAGASA said between today and tomorrow afternoon, “Liwayway” will bring light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains over Cagayan including Babuyan Islands and Batanes.

The southwest monsoon, PAGASA said, will also bring scattered light to moderate rains with at times heavy rain showers over Central Luzon, Metro Manila, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA and Western Visayas.

Those living in Batanes are advised to take precautionary actions against potentially strong winds.

Sea travel is risky over the seaboards of Luzon, including those under Signal No. 1 due to potentially rough sea conditions.
