Sereno open to running for Senate seat in 2019

(Eagle News) — Ousted Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno is open to running for a Senate seat in 2019.

Sereno made the statement in a television interview on Thursday, June 29.

According to Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, a member of the opposition group Tindig Pilipinas’ selection committee, he personally spoke to Sereno to convince her to run.

He said the opposition needed a brave candidate in their slate.

“Open siya, pinakikinggan niya the need for the opposition sa aming slate,” Trillanes said.

So far, he said they were giving Sereno “enough space.”

“Mabigat na desisyon iyan. Pagka ready na i-roll out kelangan a decision should be made,” he said.

On May 11, the Supreme Court, with a vote of 8-6, nullified Sereno’s appointment as Chief Justice after it found she lacked the integrity required to apply for the post in the first place.

This was because, the Supreme Court said, she did not file her Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth when she was teaching law at the University of the Philippines Diliman.

Sereno appealed the decision but the SC upheld it in June, saying she did not raise any new arguments that warrant a reversal of the same. Meanne Corvera
