Roque says Sereno’s “continued stay in office may not be good” for SC

MANILA, Philippines (Eagle News) — Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno’s continued stay in office may not be good for the reputation of the Supreme Court.

“Her (Sereno) continued stay in office may not be good for the institution,” Roque said in a statement.

He explained that that the decision of the 13 magistrates who “arrived at a consensus” last February 27 for the Chief Justice to take an “indefinite leave” is sending a clear message to Sereno.

Roque also said that it is already Congress and the Supreme Court which will decide on Sereno’s fate.

“We have consistently taken the view that we leave it to Congress to remove the Chief Justice if there are grounds to do so. Now that a petition has been filed in court—I think there are two petitions now pending in court, we leave it to the Supreme Court to resolve these two separate petitions,” he said.
