Rep. Fredenil Castro resigns as president of NUP

(Eagle News)–Capiz 2nd District Rep. Fredenil Castro has resigned as president of the National Unity Party.

In stepping down, Castro in a television interview cited as reason “pure and simple delicadeza.”

Castro noted that he supported the House speakership bid of Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, a position that was contrary to that of the party.

The NUP supported the bid of Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano, who ended up clinching the post.

Under a power-sharing agreement backed by President Rodrigo Duterte, Cayetano would serve as House leader for 15 months, followed by Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco for 21 months.

“I feel that I could no longer be effective as president of the party and as member of the party if I remain there because I took the opposite direction during the speakership (race),” he said.
